What Do Ecstatic Dance & Yoga Have In Common? (plus Special Event Details)

When most people think about yoga, they picture a room full of people moving through poses on a mat. While physical postures are certainly one aspect of yoga, the deeper purpose of the practice is connection—connection to yourself, your breath, your body, and the present moment.

In many ways, ecstatic dance offers a similar path.

On June 14, SoulTribe Sundays invites the Popoyo community to gather for an afternoon and evening of movement, connection, healing, and celebration. The event includes a cacao ceremony, ecstatic dance with a live DJ, sound healing, sauna and ice bath experiences, and a family-style potluck dinner.

While this isn't technically a yoga event, it shares many of the same benefits that draw people to yoga in the first place.

What Is Ecstatic Dance?

Ecstatic dance is a form of free-form movement where there are no steps to learn, no choreography to follow, and no expectations to perform.

Unlike a dance class, there is no right or wrong way to move.

Participants are encouraged to listen to the music, tune into their bodies, and allow movement to arise naturally. Some people dance wildly. Others sway gently. Some spend time sitting, stretching, or simply observing.

The goal isn't to look good.

The goal is to feel what comes up without being clouded by drugs or alcohol.

The Surprising Benefits of Ecstatic Dance

1. It Helps You Get Out of Your Head

Many of us spend our days analyzing, planning, worrying, and thinking.

Movement offers an opportunity to shift out of the mind and back into the body.

Just like yoga encourages us to connect with sensation through breath and posture, ecstatic dance helps us reconnect with our physical experience through movement.

Many participants report feeling lighter, clearer, and more present afterward.

2. It Supports Emotional Release

Our bodies often store stress, tension, and unprocessed emotions.

Have you ever noticed how your shoulders tighten during stressful periods? Or how anxiety can feel like a knot in your stomach?

Movement creates space for those emotions to move through us rather than remain stuck.

While yoga can help release tension through stretching and breathwork, ecstatic dance allows for a more spontaneous and expressive release.

Sometimes healing doesn't happen through talking—it happens through moving.

3. It Regulates the Nervous System

Many people come to yoga seeking relaxation, stress relief, or a sense of inner calm.

Ecstatic dance can provide similar benefits.

Moving to music helps discharge excess energy while increasing body awareness. Combined with practices like sound healing, sauna, cold exposure, and community connection, it can help support a healthy, resilient nervous system.

Participants often leave feeling both energized and deeply grounded.

4. It Builds Connection and Community

One of the most beautiful aspects of both yoga and ecstatic dance is the sense of connection they create.

In today's world, many people are craving authentic community.

Not another networking event.

Not another night scrolling on their phones.

But genuine human connection.

Gathering to move, share food, laugh, and simply be together reminds us that healing doesn't always happen in isolation. Sometimes it happens in circles, around dinner tables, and on dance floors.

Why We Need Play More Than Ever

As adults, we often forget how important play is.

Children instinctively dance, move, sing, and express themselves without worrying how they look.

Ecstatic dance invites us back into that state.

It's an opportunity to let go of expectations, release self-consciousness, and reconnect with joy.

In many ways, that's yoga too.

Not just the poses, but the practice of returning to our authentic selves.
