How to Build Your Own Wellness Retreat in Popoyo (Without Spending $4,000)

Anyone else have a hard time justifying dropping $4,000 on a week-long retreat that's supposed to ground you, align your chakras, and somehow make another year of hustle culture survivable?

Maybe it's just me, but there's something a little ironic about needing an expensive, curated experience to recover from working too hard.

Don't get me wrong. I totally understand the appeal. You show up, someone else handles the logistics, your meals are prepared, and a lovely retreat host tells you where to be and when.

If that's your thing, amazing.

Personally, I've always preferred building my own wellness experiences.

Not only does it save a ton of money, but I actually get to experience the place I'm visiting. I meet locals instead of only fellow retreat-goers. I stumble upon hidden gems. I decide whether I want an action-packed day or an afternoon nap in a hammock.

Most importantly, my mood dictates the itinerary—not a schedule taped to my door.

The good news? You don't have to spend hours researching where to go. I live in Popoyo and have done the legwork for you.

One of my favorite things about this little surf town is that you don't have to book an expensive retreat to have a restorative vacation.

In fact, I'd argue it's even better to create your own.

No rigid itinerary.

No mandatory 6 a.m. wake-up calls (unless that's your thing).

No pressure to participate in every activity.

Just choose what feels good for your body.

Start with Yoga

Obviously.

Check out PopoyoYoga.com for the weekly yoga schedules and sprinkle a few classes throughout your stay.

I teach Fire & Flow every Monday and Wednesday at Magnific Rock, a blend of Kundalini-inspired movement, gentle flow, stretching, and relaxation with one of the best ocean views around.

Whether you've spent the morning surfing or simply want to work out the stiffness from traveling, yoga is a wonderful way to reconnect with your body.

Book a Massage

You don't need a luxury spa to treat yourself.

Popoyo has several talented local massage therapists, and many will bring their table directly to your accommodation.

Prices typically start around $30 for an hour, making it one of the best wellness bargains around.

And for that price? Leave a generous tip.

Spend a Day at SoulTribe Healing Center

One of my favorite wellness spots in the area is SoulTribe Healing Center.

For around $10, you can enjoy:

  • sauna

  • ice bath

  • swimming pool

  • epic ocean views

  • peaceful atmosphere

  • co-working space (if real life insists on following you to paradise)

It's the perfect place for a recovery day between surf sessions.

If you're lucky enough to visit on the second Sunday of the month, don't miss their community event featuring ecstatic dance, cacao, live music, and a potluck dinner.

Lounge at a Beachside Resort

One of the best things about Popoyo is that many beautiful beachfront hotels and restaurants welcome outside guests.

Order a smoothie.

Read a book in a hammock.

Watch the surfers.

Take a dip in the pool.

Enjoy lunch with an ocean view.

Places like Surf 99, Happy Coconut, and Costa Oeste make it easy to slow down and remember that you're on vacation.

Eat Good Food

Good food is part of any good retreat.

Luckily, Nicaragua makes this easy.

Treat yourself to:

  • tropical fruit

  • fresh fish

  • smoothies

  • coconut water

  • local coffee

Some of my favorite local spots include Baya in Beginner's Bay for healthy meals, Malibu for fresh food and good vibes, and Chanti Café for coffee, breakfast, and a little vintage shopping. Or if the timing is right, grab fresh fruits and veggies directly from the truck passing through the neighborhood.

Stay Hydrated

Hydration deserves its own section.

Between the heat, surfing, yoga, and long beach days, your body needs more than just plain water.

Fresh coconut water is nature's electrolyte drink, and you can often find it fresh from the source.

I also love adding fresh lime and a pinch of sea salt to water for a simple homemade electrolyte boost.

And if you're looking for something local, check out Live Nutritionals. Their coconut water kefir and natural electrolyte drinks are delicious alternatives to the brightly colored powders packed with artificial sweeteners and unnecessary additives.

Take a Dip in a Tide Pool & Catch the Sunset

The best activity in Popoyo might also be the cheapest.

No entry fee.

No reservations.

No itinerary.

Just grab a tide pool (make sure it’s around low tide) and watch the sky as it changes colors.

Sleep In

This might be the most radical wellness advice I have.

You don't need to optimize every second of your vacation.

Popoyo is a sleepy surf town. Things wind down early.

If your body wants ten hours of sleep, let it.

That's part of the retreat.

The Best Part?

The beauty of building your own wellness retreat is that it looks different for everyone.

Maybe your perfect day includes surfing and yoga.

Maybe it's sipping a smoothie by the pool followed by an ice bath.

Maybe it's a massage and an afternoon nap.

Maybe it's reading a book in a hammock while absolutely nothing productive happens.

Popoyo has a funny way of reminding people that wellness doesn't have to be complicated—or expensive.

Sometimes it's just moving your body.

Eating good food.

Spending time in nature.

Meeting interesting people.

Watching the sunset.

And giving yourself permission to slow down.

Honestly, that sounds like a pretty good retreat to me.
