Monkey Sighting While Teaching Yoga at Rancho Santana: One of Nicaragua's Most Beautiful Yoga Studios
If you've ever dreamed of practicing yoga while listening to waves crash against the cliffs, watching monkeys play in the trees, and ending class with one of Nicaragua's most spectacular sunsets, Rancho Santana might just become your favorite yoga studio.
I've taught at a lot of beautiful places throughout Nicaragua, but there is something truly magical about leading a class here.
One evening during Yin Yoga, a curious monkey climbed into the tree directly beside our yoga shala and casually began munching on leaves while everyone lay quietly in their poses.
I smiled and told the class,
"And if anyone wants to see a monkey... you can open your eyes and take a peek."
Moments like that simply don't happen in most yoga studios.
What is Rancho Santana?
Rancho Santana is a 2,700-acre oceanfront community located near Popoyo on Nicaragua's Emerald Coast. It combines luxury vacation rentals, private residences, restaurants, beaches, hiking trails, wellness experiences, surfing, horseback riding, and one of the most beautiful yoga spaces in the country. The property was developed in the late 1990s and has grown into one of Nicaragua's premier luxury destinations.
Although many people assume Rancho Santana is a private resort, it's actually both a residential community and a boutique resort.
Is Rancho Santana Open to the Public?
Yes—but with a few important exceptions.
Rancho Santana welcomes outside guests to enjoy many of its wellness and dining experiences. You can book public yoga classes, schedule a spa treatment, or make reservations at one of the restaurants on the property.
During the peak holiday season (typically mid-December through mid-January), access for outside guests may be limited as the resort is often at capacity. If you're planning a visit during that time, it's always best to contact Rancho Santana in advance to see what's available.
Reservations are recommended year-round to ensure you can access the services you'd like to enjoy.
The Yoga Experience
The yoga palapa sits high above the Pacific Ocean, offering one of the most breathtaking views on Nicaragua's Emerald Coast.
From your mat, you'll enjoy a sweeping panorama stretching far beyond Playa Santana, with views reaching all the way past Astillero. It's an expansive coastline that few places in the area can match.
Instead of traffic or city noise, your soundtrack is:
crashing waves
tropical birds
ocean breezes
rustling palm trees
the occasional howler monkey
As the sun begins to set, the coastline glows gold.
It's the kind of place that makes it easy to be fully present.
My Favorite Part
I've taught both Vinyasa and Yin classes here, and every class feels a little different.
Tropical birds create a relaxing soundtrack.
The ocean breeze rustles in to cool everyone down at just the right time.
Sometimes monkeys decide to become honorary yoga students.
That evening during Yin, our furry visitor quietly settled into a nearby tree while we practiced. Rather than interrupting class, it became part of the experience—a gentle reminder that nature is always welcome here.
Those are the moments I remember long after class ends.
How Much Are Yoga Classes?
At the time of writing, drop-in yoga classes cost US$25 plus tax, while private sessions are also available by reservation. Mats, blocks, and props are provided. Prices may change, so it's always worth confirming when you book.
Where Can You Find the Rancho Santana Yoga Schedule?
Rancho Santana updates its monthly wellness schedule on their site regularly. Check back often.
You can also ask about the weekly yoga schedule by:
Contacting the Spa in El Bosque.
Calling Rancho Santana's concierge.
More Than Just Yoga
If you're making the drive to Rancho Santana, consider turning it into a full wellness experience.
You can book a massage at the Spa in El Bosque, enjoy lunch overlooking the ocean, grab coffee at El Café, or reserve dinner at one of the property's restaurants.
While Rancho Santana welcomes outside guests for these experiences, access to the surf breaks, private beach entrances, and trail system is reserved for homeowners and resort guests. If you're interested in exploring the trails, guided tours may be available by reservation.
Because access policies and seasonal offerings can change, it's always a good idea to reach out ahead of your visit and make reservations whenever possible.
Final Thoughts
One of the things I love most about living near Popoyo is discovering places that help you slow down.
Rancho Santana is one of those places.
Whether you come for yoga, a massage, dinner with an ocean view, or simply to watch the sunset, it's easy to understand why so many people fall in love with it.
And if you're lucky...
You might even get to practice yoga alongside a monkey.
