Kundalini Yoga Kriyas: Four Simple Practices to Balance the Elements
If you're looking for simple Kundalini Yoga kriyas to help you feel calmer, more grounded, and more connected, these four beginner-friendly practices are a wonderful place to start.
In Kundalini Yoga, a kriya is a specific combination of movement, breathwork, and sometimes mantra designed to create a particular energetic effect. Rather than simply stretching the body, each kriya works with the nervous system, breath, and subtle energy to cultivate a desired state of mind.
The four elements—Earth, Water, Fire, and Air—exist both in nature and within us. Each represents a different quality we can strengthen through intentional movement. When one element feels out of balance, we often notice it emotionally, mentally, and even physically.
The following Kundalini Yoga kriyas take just a few minutes each and are suitable for beginners. Whether you practice one or all four, they offer a simple way to reconnect with yourself.
Earth Kriya for Grounding
The Earth element is connected to the root chakra, which governs our sense of safety, stability, belonging, and survival.
When your Earth energy is balanced, you feel grounded, secure, and supported. When it becomes depleted, you may experience anxiety, restlessness, financial worries, or a feeling that you don't quite belong.
Mantra
"I feel safe. I belong here."
Repeat this silently as you move and breathe.
Kriya: Camel Ride (Seated Cat-Cow)
Sit comfortably in Easy Pose with your legs crossed.
Place your hands on your knees.
As you inhale through the nose, tilt your pelvis forward and lift your chest.
As you exhale, roll your pelvis back and gently round your spine.
Allow the movement to ripple through the entire spine like a wave.
Continue for 2–3 minutes, breathing slowly through the nose.
This classic Kundalini Yoga movement helps release tension in the spine, calms the nervous system, and creates a deep sense of grounding.
Water Kriya for Emotional Flow
Water teaches us to soften, adapt, and trust life instead of trying to control every outcome.
This element is associated with the kidneys, which many healing traditions connect with courage and fear. When the kidneys are depleted, we often feel more fearful, hesitant, or resistant to change.
Balanced Water energy helps us move through life with greater ease.
Mantra
"I trust the flow of my life."
Kriya: Sufi Grind
Sit comfortably with your legs crossed.
Rest your hands on your knees.
Begin making slow circles with your torso, allowing your hips, waist, and chest to move together.
Circle one minute clockwise, then one minute counterclockwise.
Keep your breath smooth and relaxed through the nose.
This gentle Kundalini Yoga kriya massages the abdominal organs, releases tension stored in the hips and lower back, and encourages emotional flexibility.
Sometimes courage doesn't come from pushing harder—it comes from learning to flow.
Fire Kriya for Confidence and Inner Strength
Fire represents your personal power.
When this element is balanced, you feel confident, courageous, and capable without needing to prove yourself. It allows you to stand in your truth without letting your ego take over.
This is one of my favorite Kundalini Yoga kriyas before:
A job interview
Public speaking
Teaching a class
A difficult conversation
Any situation where you want to show up with confidence and clarity
Mantra
"I am strong and powerful."
Kriya: Ego Eradicator
Sit comfortably with a tall spine.
Raise your arms into a wide "V" at approximately 60 degrees.
Curl your fingertips into the pads at the base of your fingers while extending your thumbs straight toward the sky.
Close your eyes and gently focus on the space between your eyebrows.
Begin Breath of Fire, a rapid, rhythmic breath through the nose powered by the pumping action of the lower abdomen. Both the inhale and exhale are equal and continuous.
Continue for 1–3 minutes.
This powerful Kundalini Yoga exercise stimulates the digestive fire, energizes the intestines, expands the heart space, and helps dissolve fear and self-doubt so your authentic strength can emerge.
Air Kriya for Love and Connection
The Air element is associated with the heart and lungs.
When Air is balanced, we breathe more freely, connect more deeply, and become more open to both giving and receiving love.
Mantra
"I am open to receiving love."
Kriya: Seated Spinal Twist
Sit comfortably with your spine tall.
Raise your arms until they are parallel to the floor.
Bend your elbows so your forearms create two soft half-moon shapes in front of your body.
As you inhale through the nose, twist your torso to the left.
As you exhale through the nose, twist to the right.
Allow your head to follow naturally while keeping your spine long.
Continue for 2–3 minutes.
This simple Kundalini Yoga kriya increases spinal mobility, encourages deeper breathing, and creates openness through the chest and heart space.
Why Practice the Four Elements?
One of the beautiful things about Kundalini Yoga is that you don't need an hour-long practice to feel a shift.
Just a few intentional minutes can help you reconnect with the energy you need most.
Feeling anxious or unsettled? Practice the Earth Kriya.
Feeling fearful or resistant to change? Choose the Water Kriya.
Need confidence before a big moment? Practice the Fire Kriya.
Want to soften and reconnect with your heart? Finish with the Air Kriya.
Each breath becomes an opportunity to return to yourself.
