Aerial Yoga at Mag Rock with Maria in Popoyo, Nicaragua
If you’ve been surfing every day in Popoyo, your body might be asking for a little love.
My friend was visiting town recently and wanted to try something new, so we decided to check out Maria’s aerial yoga class at Mag Rock. I’ve tried a lot of different yoga styles over the years, but I have to say—hanging upside down in a silk hammock might be one of my favorite experiences yet.
There’s something about being suspended in the air that feels both playful and deeply therapeutic at the same time.
What is Aerial Yoga?
Aerial yoga uses a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling to support your body while you stretch, strengthen, and move through poses.
Instead of fighting gravity, the hammock helps you decompress your spine, release tension in your neck and shoulders, and explore inversions safely.
In a surf town like Popoyo, this kind of practice feels especially good. Paddling, surfing, and travel can leave the body tight, and aerial yoga offers a totally different way to move.
My Experience at Aerial Yoga with Maria
From the moment class started, I could feel my body relax.
Maria guides you through a series of movements using the hammock to support deep stretches and gentle inversions. At one point we were hanging upside down, and the feeling was incredible.
Weightless.
My spine and neck felt like they were decompressing in real time.
At another moment, the hammock wraps around you like a little cocoon, and you just float there. I honestly don’t remember feeling that cozy since being in the womb (not that I remember that, ha!)
And then there are the fun parts—moments where you feel like you’re flying like Superman, swinging lightly through the air with the ocean breeze coming through the studio.
It’s equal parts therapy, play, and meditation.
