Why Adding Journaling to Yoga Class Feels Like a Mini Retreat in Popoyo
Sometimes you don’t need to “fix” your life.
You just need something healthy to move through it.
The other day, I woke up feeling heavy. Personal life stuff. Mind racing. That low-grade emotional static where you know sitting at home spiraling isn’t the answer.
I needed movement.
I needed community.
I needed to get out of my own head.
So I checked the yoga schedule on Popoyo Yoga and saw that Waves and Wifi was hosting a yoga class with a journaling component afterward.
Honestly? That tiny detail was enough to get me to make the trek to Guasacate.
Because something about adding journaling to yoga transforms the whole experience. It stops feeling like just a workout class and starts feeling more like a retreat.
And when life feels emotionally loud, that extra layer of intention matters.
Why Journaling After Yoga Works So Well
There’s something powerful about journaling immediately after yoga.
Your nervous system is calmer.
Your mind is quieter.
Your body has already helped move some of the emotional energy around.
You’re not staring at a blank page from a stressed-out mental state. You’re writing from somewhere softer and more connected.
It’s honestly one of the reasons yoga retreats feel so transformative—they create space not just to move your body, but to actually process your inner world.
Adding journaling to a yoga class brings a little piece of that experience into everyday life.
A Windy but Beautiful Evening in Guasacate
The class was led by Jana, who opened with a mantra that felt very aligned with where I was emotionally:
“I let go of the things that don’t serve me with grace, to make space for wellness.”
Yeah. Felt that one immediately.
Thankfully, Jana had learned from the previous week’s almost-get-blown-into-the-ocean experience and positioned herself facing the opposite direction. 😂
It was still windy—because, well, Popoyo—but the class was smaller, more grounded, and easier to tune into.
And because most of us had been practicing yoga for a while, she decided to challenge us a bit more.
Which sounded great in theory.
Until the next morning when my abs reminded me of every single core exercise we did.
We worked through stronger flows, played with crow pose, and even got into headstands. The kind of class where you leave feeling simultaneously humbled and energized.
The Journaling Portion: Turning Yoga Into Reflection
After savasana, instead of rushing off and immediately grabbing our phones, Jana handed out paper and offered a few New Moon reflection prompts.
And honestly—that shift changed the entire energy of the evening.
Instead of ending class and snapping back into normal life, everyone softened into reflection.
It felt intentional. Spacious. Human.
Almost like the nervous system got a chance to fully complete the exhale.
Why More Yoga Classes Should Include Journaling
I genuinely think more yoga studios and retreat spaces should incorporate journaling into classes.
Not because people need to become “deep” or spiritually enlightened overnight.
But because modern life rarely gives us pauses long enough to hear ourselves think.
Yoga opens the body.
Journaling opens the conversation with yourself.
And together? They create something really grounding.
Especially in places like Popoyo and Guasacate, where people often come searching for a reset without even realizing it.
The Perfect Ending: A Clothing Swap & Little Life Refresh
As if the evening wasn’t already wholesome enough, Waves and Wifi was also hosting a clothing swap afterward.
Which somehow felt weirdly symbolic.
Like… shedding old energy externally too.
I ended up finding a few new pieces, chatting with people, lingering longer than I planned, and leaving feeling noticeably lighter than when I arrived (even though my tote bag was heavier).
Not because my problems magically disappeared.
But because I gave myself somewhere healthy to place my energy instead of drowning in it.
And honestly, sometimes that’s enough to change the trajectory of a whole week.

What am I ready to release with grace?
What part of myself is asking for more care right now?
What would growth look like if it felt nourishing instead of forced?
