Boxing in Popoyo: My Experience at Surf 99 with Charles
Last week, I tried the newest addition to Surf 99’s movement schedule: a boxing class with Charles. I went for a workout and left feeling lighter, happier, and a little more connected to my own strength.
Because it’s low season in Popoyo, classes have been quiet. As luck would have it, I ended up with a private session.
A Little Sweat, a Lot of Punching
After a quick warm-up, Charles walked me through some boxing basics, and we started practicing drills. He let me borrow his fancy boxing gloves.
Then he instructed me to use him as a human punching bag.
Okay, he didn’t exactly say that. But with him guiding my punches, I had plenty of room to unleash some of the power inside me.
And unleash I did.
Somewhere between the drills and the punches, I noticed anger coming to the surface. It’s an emotion I’ve often denied having, or quickly pushed aside in favor of being understanding and easygoing.
Apparently, my shadow self had been waiting for someone to hand her a pair of boxing gloves. All that anger I insisted I didn’t have? Turns out, she had a few things to say. For once, I let her.
It felt good to let myself be strong, take up space, and throw a punch.
Boxing, Yoga, and a Coffee with a View
Our session included about 40 minutes of movement. Charles explained that group classes usually take longer because more people need to move through the drills.
I was happy to hang back afterward, take advantage of the yoga mats and beautiful view, and finish with my own yoga practice. A little punching, a little stretching—a surprisingly satisfying combination.
Classes at Surf 99 also include a coffee or juice from the restaurant. Afterward, I grabbed my chilled calala juice (also known as passionfruit), settled in to do some work, and eventually headed home feeling better than when I’d arrived.
If you’re looking for things to do in Popoyo beyond surfing and yoga, a boxing class is a fun way to move your body and try something different.
Boxing and Private Training with Charles
Surf 99’s movement classes will pause for October, with Charles expected back in November. The planned schedule includes one self-defense class, two boxing classes, and one fitness class.
